BIBLE STUDY NOTES ON COLOSSIANS 2:1-23

Posted by Elfriede Copple

We have been studying the Book of Revelation but the other day while reading Colossians 2:1-23 I realized that this relates to Revelation 3:14-22.

Colossians 2:1 – Paul writes:
“For I want you to know what a great conflict I have for you and those in Laodicea,…”

Laodicea is the seventh of the Seven Churches Jesus speaks to in Revelation 3:14-22. Laodicea is the “lukewarm/complacent” church! They considered themselves “rich, wealthy and have need of nothing” as Laodicea was the centre for three major industries which were banking, textiles and medicines in those days.

Paul tells them in Colossians 2:2-3 that he desires, “that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge”.

Life in Laodicea was very difficult for the Christians. For example, in order to get into the “Market Place” where all the trade happened they had to burn incense at the gate in honor and to worship the god of gods—who was “Caesar”! This was a requirement put in place by “man”! God commands that believers have no other gods beside Him though!

Further, in order to belong to the guild—a circle business people were to join—you had to worship other gods (for trade and blessings with finances), and attend the annual celebrations which would end up being festivals of drinking, eating food sacrificed to idols, and sexual immorality that took place in temples of the various gods! A place in complete violation of God’s commands!

To drive home the point, Paul warns them in verses 4-5 not to be deceived with persuasive words but to be steadfast in their faith in Christ. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS!

In Colossians 2:8, 16-18 and 20-23 Paul gives us a preview of what the Christians in Laodicea will have to deal with, and how they will have to stand fast in their faith in order to not fall for the temptation to comply with men’s traditions just so that they can do business.

Colossians 2:8: “Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ”.

Colossians 2:16-18: “So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or Sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,”

Colossians 2:20-23: “Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations—Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle, which all concern things which perish with the using—according to the commandments and doctrines of men? These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.”

Are we complying with some of men’s traditions in order to fit in or to belong to the world?

May we stay firm in the Lord!

BIBLE STUDY NOTES ON DANIEL 9:21-27

Posted by Elfriede Copple

Today I am going to post a short Bible study Mike and I did on Daniel 9:21-27.

Daniel 9:21-23

Yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering. And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, “O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand. At the beginning of your supplications the command went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are greatly beloved; therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision:

Daniel did not understand the vision he had prophesied. He prayed for help and God sent Gabriel the angel to give understanding to Daniel what the prophecy was saying.

Daniel 9:24

“Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, To seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy.

Warren Henderson explains in his book Infidelity and Loyalty pg 391: “The Hebrew word shabua is translated “week,” but literally means “seven,” much like our English word dozen means twelve of something. The “something” is determined by the context. … Based on how the final week is described elsewhere in Scripture, we are able to conclude that a week is speaking of seven years”.

So the first phrase Seventy Weeks are determined is actually 7 x 70 which equals 490 years. The first 483 of the 490 years began when Nehemiah started re-building the wall of Jerusalem, and ended at Christ’s crucifixion.

The rest of verse 24 explains the same thing Romans 3:21-22 reveals that when Christ is believed upon the believers will have the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ. The anointing of the Most Holy means that the Father commissioned the Son to shed His blood and die for the sins of the world.

Daniel 9:25-26

“Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem Until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times. “And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; and the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, and till the end of the war desolations are determined.

Gabriel explains that Nehemiah’s rebuilding of Jerusalem shall be 7 weeks or 49 years, and then 62 more weeks or 434 more years until the crucifixion of Christ. 49 years plus 434 years totals 483 years. The prince who is to come will happen at a presently undetermined time. He is the Antichrist. In AD70 Nehemiah’s work was destroyed. And till the end: means the end of the Church Age—time of the Gentiles—rapture of the church—time that only the Father knows (Matthew 24:36).

Daniel 9:27

Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wind of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, even until the consummation, which is determined, is poured out on the desolate.”

Then means after that—the rapture—he—the Antichrist—shall confirm a covenant—make a peace treaty—with many—all those who are left behind—for one week—seven years—the beginning of the Tribulation period. But in the middle of the week—three-and-a-half years—the Great Tribulation begins. Ezekiel Chapters 38 + 39 prophesy the war of Armageddon at the end of the seven-year Tribulation which matches what is coming in the Revelation of Jesus Christ (Revelation 19:13-16).

William MacDonald says: “Gabriel gave Daniel an outline for Israel’s future” (Daniel 9:21-27). God’s Word also gives us a prescription for eternal life.

BIBLE STUDY NOTES ON REVELATION 4:6-7 –continued-

Posted by Elfriede Copple

Revelation 4:6-7
Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal. And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle.

Today we want to continue with verse 7.

According to William MacDonald “the four living creatures seem to be a combination of the cherubim in Ezekiel 10 and the seraphim in Isaiah 6.”

Vine’s Expository Dictionary of Old & New Testament Words by W.E. Vine (page 177) describes the Cherubim as being “of one piece at the two ends of the golden lid on the Ark of the covenant inside the Holy of Holies. This signifies that the redeemed and glorified creatures were bound up with the sacrifice of Christ. Being in union with Christ then proceeds out of the Mercy Seat.”

What’s a description of the Cherubim and Seraphim?

They are created beings just as we humans are created beings. Therefore, angels are not from eternity past nor are they, or we, omniscient as is our God. We humans are like the angels bound up with the sacrifice of Christ. The function of the redeemed cherubim, seraphim, and humans is depicted as being in fellowship with God as well as being there for serving Him. The cherubim (cherubim is plural, with the letter im at the end, cherub is singular) compared to the seraphim are much the same except for primary duties. The cherubim are primarily guards, or attendants, “attached” – “united” – to God’s throne (Exodus 25:18-19), whereas the seraphim flew above and around (Isaiah 6:2-7) to attend God’s throne and offer praises to Him. God’s angelic court serves as an example to each believer: As redeemed created beings who are eternally thankful for being united with our Savior—in Him and Him in us—our primary purpose in our life now and eternal is to serve and worship God.

May we also serve and worship Lord with our life, prayers, songs and behavior!

WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN THE LORD JESUS SAYS: “BUY FROM ME GOLD REFINED IN THE FIRE”, AND “WHITE GARMENTS”, USE “EYE SALVE”? –continued-

Posted by Elfriede Copple

REVELATION 3:18  [Jesus speaking]
I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.” (NKJV)

Last week we unpacked the meaning of “gold” – “refined in the fire” – “buy from Me gold” and why we should do that. This week we will look at the meaning of “white garments” and “eye salve”.

WHY AND HOW DO WE BUY FROM THE LORD JESUS CHRIST?

Now, before we get to the white garments I would like to share some information I found in the John MacArthur Study Bible with regard to the “gold”, “white garments” and “eye salve” concerning the church of Laodicea. In those days Laodicea was the centre for three major industries which were banking, textiles and medicines.

MacArthur Study Bible commentary quotes:
Jesus offers them the spiritual counterparts to their three major industries. Each item was a way to refer to genuine salvation.”
(pg. 2807, comment on Revelation 3:18)

The spiritual counterpart to banking would be “buying gold from Jesus” becoming pure and righteous through His sacrifice. Spiritually “white garments” would replace the textiles and “eye salve” the medicines.

What does “white garments” stand for? I think we can all agree that “white” is the symbol for “purity”. How can we stay pure in today’s world and society? Not easy with all the temptations around us! There is only One who can assist us and make us strong to stand against the temptations of this world and that is Jesus Christ! Having been baptized in the Holy Spirit when we accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior we can have the strength to withstand evil. If we read God’s Word and listen, the Holy Spirit within us will guide and protect us.

Buy white garments from Jesus by abiding in the Word, obeying what we read in the Word, and listening to the Holy Spirit through reading the Word!

Let’s continue to the “eye salve”.

Eye salve was one of the major industries in Laodicea. We use our eyes to see, unfortunately not everyone can SEE the TRUTH! Jesus urges the Laodiceans and us to anoint our eyes with eye salve so that we will be able to see the Truth and won’t be deceived!

Most of us have eyes to see, but do we always see the Truth? Or are we blinded by the enemy?

Matthew 6:22-23
The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” (NKJV)

2 Corinthians 4:4
whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.

There were a lot of different “gods” in Laodecia to be worshipped. The Christians were under great pressure not to fall into idolatry. Their eyes saw all those different gods and rituals going on around them, and the eyes transmitted that to the brain to entice them to follow since it looked good and participation could prosper you! The enemy was trying to sell it to them in whatever package possible. That’s why Jesus told them to buy “eye salve” from Him so that they would see the Truth, that they would be able to discern right from wrong and stand firm!

How do we buy from Jesus?
Quoting Nadia Mikhael M.D. from her book
“Women of the Bible made a Difference”
pg 41, paragraph 4: “remember your ABCDs:

Accept the Word of God as truth,
Be faithful in reading it,
Commit to its ways, and
Do what it says!”

How are we doing? Are our eyes wandering? Do we need to buy “eye salve” from the Lord?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN THE LORD JESUS SAYS: “BUY FROM ME GOLD REFINED IN THE FIRE”, AND “WHITE GARMENTS”, USE “EYE SALVE”?

HOW DO WE BUY FROM THE LORD JESUS CHRIST AND WHY?

REVELATION 3:18 [Jesus speaking]
“I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.” (NKJV)

Let’s try to unpack this!

Gold is used figuratively for purity or righteousness! Referenced from:
A – International Standard Bible Encyclopedia Online  (under 5. Figurative, line 4)
“Refining of gold is a figure for great purity”.
B – H. A. Ironside says in his New Testament Commentary (mantisbible.com) that it is “divine righteousness”.

1 Peter 1:7 “that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,” (NKJV)

-refined by fire– “God uses trial and suffering to separate the believer from those things that hinder fellowship with God and growth in the spiritual life.” quote from H. A. Ironside.

Are there circumstances, thoughts, or relationships in your life that need to be put to the fire test?

Getting back to “purity” and “righteousness”.  JESUS IS PURE AND RIGHTEOUS! GOD’S WORD IS PURE AND ENDURES FOREVER  (Proverbs 30:5; 1 Peter 1:25)!  As humans, we cannot behave righteous out of our own strength all the time, we will stumble when we go by God’s standard for righteousness. (Exodus 20:2-17 Ten Commandments)

So how do we achieve “righteousness” in God’s eyes – buy “gold” from Jesus and why?

We need to be cleansed from our sin/unrighteousness. This is achieved by Jesus Christ taking upon Himself all the world’s sins, and taking the punishment – the death sentence that we deserve, and dying a terrible death on the cross!
2 Corinthians 5:21 “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

GotQuesitons.org comments: “On the cross Jesus exchanged our sin for His perfect righteousness so that we can one day stand before God and He will see not our sin, but the holy righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

How can Jesus’ death cleanse us from our sin and unrighteousness when Jesus is quoted in John 15:5c saying: “Apart from Me you can do nothing“,?

This is the easy part! We need to become part of Jesus, part of His body the church; Jesus is the Head of the church and the believers are the body. You can become part of the body when you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (NKJV)

John 14:6 “Jesus said to him, “I amthe way,the truth, andthe life.No one comes to the Fatherexcept through Me.” (NKJV)

Repent of your sins, turn away from them, confess them to God the Father in the name of Jesus Christ. Believe that Jesus died on the cross for you/us, was buried and rose again on the third day. Invite Christ into your heart and life! That’s how you become a part of the body!

Buy GOLD from Jesus by obeying, abiding and reading daily God’s word the Bible.

Acts 16:31 “So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved,” (NKJV)

We will continue with the “white garments” and “eye salve” next week.

BIBLE STUDY NOTES ON THE BOOK OF REVELATION

In Chapter 2 Verses 1-7 Jesus Speaks to the First of Seven Churches

Revelation Study Guide

Revelation 2:1
“To the angel of the church of Ephesus write, ‘These things says He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands,”
(NKJV*

The Lord Jesus Christ is speaking to John and telling him what to write to the church of Ephesus.

In verse 1 Jesus is emphasizing the description of Himself which we read in chapter 1:
Revelation 1:13 – “and in the midst of the seven lampstands One like the Son of Man, clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band.”
Revelation 1:16 – “He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength.”

Ever wondered who or what the seven stars and the seven golden lampstands represent?  To answer this question we must refer back to Revelation 1:20 which states:  “the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven churches.” (NKJV*)

Revelation 2:2-4
“I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil.  And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary.  Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.” (NKJV*)

After complementing the Ephesians for their works, labor, intolerance of evil, and ability to discern false apostles and deal with them accordingly, the Lord confronted them with their tragedy being that they left their first love!  William MacDonald comments:  “The fire of their affection had died down.  They were still mostly sound in doctrine and active in service, but the true motive of all worship and service was missing.”  Apparently they were not in the whole counsel of God. Paul had warned them in Acts 20:27-31 and Ephesians 6:13-14a.

Acts 20:31  “For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God.  Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.  For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock.  Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.  Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears”. (NKJV*)

Ephesians 6:13-14a  “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.  Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth,” (NKJV*)

William MacDonald says:  “It isn’t surprising that God’s Word tells us the first piece of armor is truth.  We must take the responsibility to seriously uphold His truth.  But it is also necessary for the truth to hold us—accountable”.

This makes me want to point out that our first love is GOD!
First God, second our family, and third our country!
